The Concealer Report for Women of Color!

The following information is provided in conjunction with Palacinka.com

Sometimes we have just a little bit more to hide than usual…a blemish here, a few dark spots there, dark circles under the eyes...That’s where a good concealer comes in. While foundations will provide overall coverage and even out the skin - the under eye area, lower cheek, and jawline areas often need a thicker, more dense formulation.

Many concealers made by major cosmetics companies suffer from some of the same issues as their foundations - they are too pink or orange for many women of color, the shade range is very limited and/or are too drying.

We have rounded up our top picks for concealers that are best for women of color. They come in many price ranges and formulations, so there’s something for everybody!

Concealer should always be your exact shade or 1 shade lighter (maximum!) than your natural skin tone for best results.

Also use a light hand when applying concealer. You can always “build” to the coverage you want, and this way you won't get that “cakey” look.

For a flawless look, apply concealer to necessary areas AFTER applying your foundation.

If you have dry skin, always prep skin with a light moisturizer before applying concealer.

Use a small brush to dab onto blemishes/dark spots. Fingertips are fine for the under eye area.

Always have two concealers on hand - one for when you are tanned (real or not!) and one for your normal skin color.

Christian Dior - Dior lift Smoothing Anti-Fatique Concealer

This is a liquid concealer with sponge applicator. Our testers noticed that it visibly smoothed under eye circles, fine lines, and blemishes. It also contains anti-oxidant and hydrating ingredients and did not cake during the day. Shades contain a good amount of yellow which blended well.

Price $22.50

Available at Sephora

I-Iman Concealer

This is a liquid concealer with sponge applicator. This medium-coverage concealer did a very good job of neutralizing dark circles and small imperfections for a flawless looking complexion. Ideal for all skin types. Very nice shade range and a moisturizing but not oily formulation.  Shades we tried: #1, 3, 5

Price $18

Available at Sephora

L'Oreal Visible Lift Line Minimizing Concealer

Cream in a tube applicator. Provides great light to medium coverage and works well for those with yellow undertones. Did not cake or feel dry during the day. Shade range was not very extensive but was formulation was impressive for a drugstore brand. This product was also great for our testers with more mature skin, as the product did not "settle" into small lines around the eye.  Shades we tried: Medium, Medium/Deep

Price $8.99

Available at Drugstore.com

Sue Devitt Automatic Camouflage Concealer

This is a liquid concealer with sponge applicator in a convenient twist up application. This contains Nylon-12, an ingredient which actually “bends” with human skin. Provides flawless, long-lasting coverage. Shade range was not extensive, but product was one of our tester's favorites for it's creamy formula, packaging and ability to cover blemishes and dark circles.  Shades we tried: Great Sandy Desert, Nullarbor Plain

Price $21

Available at Sephora

Lancome MAQUICOMPLET Complete Coverage Concealer $23.00

This creamy, liquid concealer hides flaws, blemishes and dark circles with full, natural-looking coverage. This was another big winner with our testers. Great shade range and the fomula was easy to blend and covered well. Formula did not cake during the day and a "little went a long way" according to one of our testers.  Shades we tried: Cameé, Medium Bisque, Suede

Price $23

Available at Sephora
