Some salons call it
training night, some their apprentice program, and some "model
calls." What we call it is a great idea! No matter what its
name the concept is the same -- a salon will provide training for their
assistants, who work on individuals like you and me, typically under the direction of an
experienced colorist or stylist at a fraction of the usual price. (A few
salons actually offer these services for free.) Many salons who
offer training programs have well known names and well deserved
reputations. However, realize that the work is being done by an
assistant, not the experienced stylist or colorist. Since we have not
sampled these services, we suggest you do a little investigation before booking
an appointment. As an example, in a few cases, we found programs where
assistants were not supervised by a senior staff member when working on
customers -- the assistants simply charged less for their services. Each
salon has its own program (different time of day, etc.) with its own
"rules." Although most offer programs in both cuts and coloring,
not every salon does. Many have long waiting lists so check them out, find
one you're comfortable with, and book in advance.
