Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

THE PERFECT MAKE-UP BAG ...

As I was having lunch with an old friend, she pulled out a small retractable brush and said this is perfect for a make-up bag.  That got me thinking -- what goes into the perfect make-up bag.  Later, looking at my own cluttered assortment of make-up in what constitutes my make-up bag, I started,  mentally, to put together a list of what I wished I carried around.  So, I gave myself a mission to put together efficiently what I would need to go from my office on a day where I wore no make-up to an evening out on the town.  So, I put pen to paper and with a little research here's what I came up with.  (There is a list of all the products that I mention, their price and a link to an e-commerce site at the end of this page.)

THE BAG

What bag you choose is a matter of your taste and the size of the bag you need.  They run the gamut from soup to nuts in style, size and price.  I found a couple of bags that I thought were interesting.  Sephora's Roll-Up Travel Bag ($22) which has four zippered compartments and looked both roomy and compact.  If you want to spend a little less, Creations by Alan Stuart makes a medium ($9.99) and large ($12.99) mesh cosmetics bag that looks like it would do the trick.

SO WHAT GOES IN IT?

Mirror - A double sided mirror (one regular and the other magnifying) is a must.  Sephora makes a double sided Black Travel Mirror ($6) that looks like it would do the trick.

BRUSHES - I can't stress enough what good brushes can do for make-up.  I thought Sephora's Professional Essential Brush Set ($38) gave the biggest bang for the buck.  Although not as compact as I might have wished, this set of five useful and good quality brushes in a folded pouch is my choice.  If you want to spend less, Revlon makes four types of natural hair  brushes.  They range in price from $6.99 to $7.99.

FOUNDATION/POWDER - Sephora makes refillable flasks ($2.50) which could be used to store foundation.  Another choice might be to forget the foundation and treat yourself to T. LeClerc Powder.  These gorgeous powders (which come pressed or loose) finish skin beautifully.  Although expensive ($45), I think they're worth the price.  If you buy the loose, Sephora makes a small  powder jar with sifter ($4) which is perfect for travel.

EYES, LIPS & CHEEKS - Several brands have make-up palettes which include products for eyes, lips, and cheeks.  I list the palettes below but will note two.  One is Paula Dorf's Naughty and Nice Quickie Compact which is tiny, includes eight colors, and is well priced ($25).  On the other end of the spectrum are Nars' Artist Palettes.  Larger in size than most and considerably more expensive ($60-$70), they may still be worth considering for the wonderful shades inside.   Mascara is another must and my choice for your make-up bag is Maybelline Great Lash Washable Straight Mascara.  A favorite of make-up artists for years, the price is also right ($4.29).  The Sephora Duo Eyelash/Brow Comb ($5) is a handy tool as well.  My suggestion for lip liners is to use a shade made by the company that makes the palette.  When in doubt, ask the e-merchant or store representative to help.  For eyeliners you can go the same route or if you are looking for a standard color you could consider L'Oreal Perfectly Soft Liner ($5.99).

TO KEEP FRESH - Biore Facial Cleansing Cloths Travel Package (10 for $2.99),  Butler Travel Toothbrush with anti-bacterial bristles ($2.99), Colgate Total Travel Size toothpaste ($0.99), and Comodyne Deodorant Towelettes For Sensitive Skin (8 for $3.99) are all good choices to freshen up before "the big night out."  Also, most drugstores have travel size products which are great to add to your make-up bag.
