Beauty Bits and Tips: a few more beauty hints from usBeauty hits and misses: five products we love and five that don't make the grade
HITS DDF Daily Protective Moisturizer SPF 15 ($34 at The SkinStore.com) - This product is exactly what it says it is, a lightweight moisturizer with UVA and UVB protection. It is easily applied and foundation glides right over it. Better yet, unlike so many products with SPF there are none of those nasty little pieces of product coming off on your hands -- something that I find frequently happens when you put makeup over an SPF moisturizer. DDF Protective Eye Cream SPF 15 ($39 at The SkinStore.com) - Like its sister product above, this eye cream has a light moisturizing formula with UVA and UVB protection, not that easy to find. The fact that it contains vitamin K (for dark circles) and antioxidants is a bonus. Since I'm looking for protection from my daytime eye cream, not a miracle, this product really fits the bill. CoverBlend Multi Function Concealer-SPF 15 ($15 at The SkinStore.com) - I was approached by the company to try this product. Having given up using concealer (yes, I admit it) because I could never seem to get it right, I was skeptical. However, I've been converted. Does it cover everything flawlessly? No. But, it does lighten the dark circles under my eyes without emphasizing the creases and my eye makeup isn't slipping onto it an hour after I apply it. A hint, I found using eye cream under it helpful for application and patting on very thin coats is the way to go. DevaCurl Angell ($11.90 at CosmeticMall.com) - My hair is naturally curly and I mean really, really curly. For years I wore it very short and fought the battle of the hair dryer to try to get it straight. About a year ago, my talented stylist persuaded me to let it grow and though I agreed, I fought him every step of the way. That is, until I found this product. Never liking the tight curls that dry naturally, I decided to let my hair go a little wild and finger comb the curls after they dry. I kept searching for products that would let me to do this without the curls getting all frizzy. DevaCurl Angell is the answer. Now, I can finger comb my hair whenever I want and this product keeps the curls looking good all day. AG Hair Cosmetics Spray Body ($9.90 at spiralhaircase.com) - Along with having curls, I also have relatively fine hair. By the end of the day, my hair was drooping, no matter what I did with it. I was at my wit's end when someone suggested that I needed something to give my hair extra body. I tried a few products and was unhappy with each. Some were too sticky (see below) and others really didn't do the job. Spray Body came to the rescue. Not only does it give my hair the body it needs, but the formula is weightless -- you would never guess you have the product in your hair. Misses Talika Heated Eyelash Curler ($30 at Sephora.com) - This product has the number one spot on my Misses List. There is virtually nothing about it I liked. To start with, putting the batteries in was difficult (and they suggest that you remove them after each use.) The design of the top part which you clamp down on your lashes made it difficult to position, so it kept squeezing my eyelid. To make matters worse, I couldn't get it to curl my lashes. Give me my Shu Umera eyelash curler any day. Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray ($28.99 at CosmeticMall.com) - Indeed I do need a thickening spray for my limp locks, but this was not what I had in mind. This spray dries very sticky and caused my curls to frizz worse than they normally do. And, forget about a comb or brush when using this product. DDF Luminous Moisture Shelter SPF 15 ($34 at The SkinStore.com) - As much as I liked their Protective Moisturizer (see above), I disliked this product. The "luminous particles" are pink in tone and it turned my sallow skin an unpleasant pink. This product might work for someone whose skin has pink undertones but it certainly didn't work for me. StriVectin-SD ($135 at The SkinStore.com) - The makers of this hot product ask the question, "Better than Botox?" I think I finally have the answer. I wrote about my first five weeks with StriVectin several months ago. At that time I was impressed with the product's ability to moisturize and thought that some of my lines were fading a little. As time passed, however, I began to notice that my skin just wasn't looking as good as it did before I started using StriVectin and dropped my previous regimens (of vitamin C in the morning and hydroxy acid in the evening). Needless to say, the StriVectin went to the back of the closet and the vitamin C and hydroxy acid went back onto the shelf. I've never had Botox, but, in my opinion, StriVectin's maker's should stop asking the question because the answer is probably "no." Dr. Brandt SPF 15 Chemfree - ($35 at Sephora.com) - This product sounded like a dream come true. A chemical free lotion that both protected and moisturized. Alas, it was not to be. This slightly thick cream made my skin sort of a pasty white. While I love my light skin, this was too light and I it screamed, "I've got on sunscreen." Even with make-up over it, it lightened too much. Have a beautiful month! Carol May 2004 E-commerce sites carrying
