Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

the  hot new looks for spring 2004: what they are and how to wear them

I live in New York and  look forward to the change in the seasons.  I love rediscovering old favorites in my closet, updating my wardrobe, and finding new looks in makeup.  The only problem is, I get confused.  What really are the trends (each makeup line will tell you something different) and how can I wear the new looks so they suit me.   So, this year I did some research.  I went through magazines to try to find some basic trends and then  looked at a number of product lines to see what they were showing.    Here's what I came up with.

  • Pink is a major theme

  • Another theme  is apricot/peach

  • A third one is gold

  • Shades of purple (from lavender to plum) can be seen, but more as an accent and  less as a theme

  • Green is  being used on the  eye (often as an accent)

  • Eyes are generally pale

  • Glossy lips  are in vogue

To give you some idea of what I'm talking about,  here is a sampling of what some of the major color lines are showing.  Benefit is showing shades of peach and gold, Lorac is using a lot of pinks, peaches, and mauves, Smashbox's theme is apricot, lavenders and greens, and Paul and Joe are showing pastel eyes in lemon, baby blue, and golden green along with pink and peach for the lips.  All of these brands are available at Sephora.com.

Then the question becomes, "How do I put these themes and colors together in a way that works for me?"  (In my case, I have light skin with a great deal of yellow in it, medium to dark brown hair, and brown eyes).  Always ready for a little guidance, I sought out the help of a friendly makeup artist and  here's a look that we came up with.   For the eyes we used a pink shadow touched with peach as a base eye color (Bobbi Brown Petal- $18), a light brownish purple shadow in the crease (Bobbi Brown Heather-$18), and green right along the edge of the upper eyelid.  Since I had a light sage green eye shadow at home (Paula Dorf Enchanted - $18), that's what I'm using but any shade of  sage green would probably do nicely.  For a liner we chose  a dark, golden-olive  eye pencil (Nars Kyoto- $18).   As a blush we used a pinky/peach tone with a slight golden shimmer (Nars Orgasm-$22.50) and for the lips we chose a medium golden-taupe pencil (Dior Linen-$22).  We lined and colored the lips with the pencil and then used a light purple-mauve shimmery gloss over it (Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Taste of Strawberry-$22).

I loved the look, but as importantly, I realized that I never would have been adventurous enough to put so many different colors together.  Take a look at these colors to see what I mean and to get some ideas. (Bobbi Brown is available at CosmeticMall.com, Paula Dorf and Nars at Beauty.com, and  Dior at Sephora.com.)

The point is - throw away your preconceived notions and experiment!  Take out your makeup and try it in different ways.  Go to the makeup counter and let the makeup artist try new looks on you.  True, makeup should always be enhancing, but it should also be fun.  I'm hauling out my makeup case and to see what else I can come up with.

Have a beautiful month!
