Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

facing forward:  the look of fall 2005

Labor Day has passed and thoughts of Fall are finally here.  With it come a new season of styles and palette of colors.  I've been shopping to find some of the new trends.  In clothes, black is back with browns and purples there in a big way.  There's also a little bit of most other colors in their Fall hues thrown in.  In makeup its the same.  There are many colors to choose from but some of the major trends seem to be:

  • Shades of purple

  • Brown smoky eyes

  • Golds and coppers, both used alone or sparkling in other colors

  • Green as accent eye colors

  • Lips either a glossy neutral - often with a shimmer or berry stained

Wondering what was right for me, I went the pros who put together two entirely different looks for me.  Each is great and will take me through the season like a champ.

My first stop was to MAC where I find the prices reasonable and the array of highly pigmented colors mind boggling.  There, a wonderful makeup artist suggested a look using purple tones which she noted are always right for Fall.  For the eyes she used the combination of Trax (a burgundy-plum with a copper shimmer) on the eyelid, Shadow Lady (a dark plum) in the crease, and Bisque (a muted pinky beige) to highlight the brow bone.  (Each shadow is $13.50).  I happen to like MAC waterproof Power Point eye pencils.  So, the dark burgundy Bordeauxline was her choice - $13.50.  She then applied the Shadow Lady over the Bordeauxline with a thin eyeliner brush to help the liner stay smudge-proof.  To top off the eyes we applied black mascara.  For the cheeks, Plum Foolery blush was picked (a sheer, slilghtly plummy color with a little shimmer-$16.50).  On the lips we used Quartz (a pink/plum pencil-$12.00) to line and fill in the lips.  I've been using my discontinued Paula Dorf lipstick in Razzmatazz (a shimmery mauve) over the liner,  but MAC has similar colors such as Eden Rocks (a pinkish beige with a mauve shimmer-$14).  We topped the lips off with Viva Glam V Lipglass (a shimmery neutral pink lip gloss-$14).  The look was pretty, ready for fall, and could be dressed down for day or up for evening.  All MAC products can be purchased at  macys.com.

I had been waiting to try Giorgio Armani's makeup collection and decided the time was right.  So I made an appointment for a makeover and headed to Saks.  The biggest negative of this line is that the products are quite expensive.  Although the brands are sold at only a limited number of stores (i.e. Saks, Neiman Marcus), they recently put up an e-commerce site so that products are now available on line at giorgioarmani-usa.com.  The plus is that the products are really beautiful.  I wanted a new foundation and Giorgio Armani is well known for theirs.   The #5 luminous silk foundation was chosen for my fair skin.  It slides on and gives a gorgeous sheer finish ($52.50).  For a the eyes and the focal point of the look, the artist suggested a smoky brown eye -- a look which had been seen on the runways with the new Fall fashions.  She started with the #20 eye shadow.  She applied this sheer coppery shimmer on the lid (starting not quite next to the inside corner of the eye) and up over the crease.  Then she chose the #6 eye shadow, a beige with a slightly yellow cast,  to use on the brow bone and along the inside edge the eye.  Finally, she chose the #33 eye shadow, a rich dark brown with coppery undertones, to use on the eyes' outer corners.  (The shadows are $23.50 each).  Next came a dark brown pencil liner.  She used Armani's #2 Smooth Silk eye pencil for the makeover, but with the help of the great people at Saks, I found that the MAC Power Point eyeliner in Stubborn Brown was virtually identical.  ($13.50 for the MAC versus $23.50 for the Armani.)  Over the liner, the dark brown #33 shadow was applied with a smudge brush both to smudge the pencil for that smoky look and to keep the liner in place.  Black mascara was the choice to give the lashes a dramatic look.  For the cheeks she applied the #2 Sheer Blush, a light,  pinky-beige with a slight shimmer ($40).  For the lips, we went slightly coppery with the #7 Smooth Silk lip pencil to line ($24) and the #5 Lipstick Mania, a sheer shimmery copper lipstick ($24), to fill in the lips.  As a final step, the #1 Lip Shimmer, a pinky-beige gloss ($25), was chosen to finish the lips.  The result, a look that was clean, beautiful, and versatile enough to be dressed up or down.

So, try a new look for Fall.  Whether you buy something new or put your "makeup wardrobe" together in a new and different way, you'll be ready to face the upcoming season beautifully.

Have a beautiful month!
