Bits and Tips: a few more beauty hints from us
sizzling
summer survival: head to toe beauty tips
It's July, it's hot
and humid, and you know the temperature is only going to rise.
So, we've been asking ourselves, "how do l look great in this type of
weather?" We've been doing some experimenting and have come to some
conclusions.
First and
foremost, keep it simple.
This type of weather calls for minimum beauty upkeep.
Get a great
haircut geared for summer wear. Have
your stylist show you how to style your hair at home and find out what
products he or she used. Also, experiment with some hair ornaments such as
beautiful barrettes, adorable clips, and stylish headbands.
Make sure your
eyebrows are well shaped.
Great looking eyebrows help minimize the need for makeup. This may be
the time to consider having them professionally shaped.
Pamper and
protect your skin.
Great skin is a goal we try to achieve all year long. However, since
summer means minimum makeup your skin is on display more than ever.
Change to a summer skin care routine if you need it.
Most importantly though, wear your sunscreen. In the summer, there are a five skin
products that I wouldn't be without.
First, a
good, light moisturizer with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at
least 15. For
everyday use, I
happen to like DDF Daily Protective Moisturizer with SPF 15 ($35 at The
SkinStore.com).
It's light consistency is great for the hot weather.
Second,
protection for my eyes.
Along with my sunglasses, I use DDF Protective Eye Cream with SPF 15
($42 at The
SkinStore.com). This is one of the few eye creams that I've
found with sun protection.
Third, a
body cream with UVA and UVB sun protection.
Again,
hard to find but Lubriderm Daily Moisture with SPF 15 is a nice light
moisturizer that does the trick ($7.99 at drugstore.com).
Fourth, a
"heavy duty" sunblock for those days when I'm outside for more
than a few minutes. I
love the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sun Blocks (on sale now for
$8.99 at drugstore.com).
These non-greasy sunscreens are available with a SPF of either 30 or 45. I
have both which I use as the occasion requires.
Fifth, a
lip product with a SPF of 15 or more.
There are a number of products that do the trick. One of my
favorites is English Ideas Tea Tree Lip Balm with SPF 18 ($9 at Sephora.com).

sunscreens, check out our article, Sun Sense.
Find a simple
makeup routine that works for you.
I've pared my makeup down to the following five minute routine:
Curl my
eyelashes.
Put on
a creamy eye shadow.
I've been experimenting with MAC's Shadestick ($15 at macys.com).
This is a thick shimmery pencil that can be used either as a shadow or a
liner. I chose the pale color Beige-ing but these sticks come in a
wide variety of colors.
Apply an
easy to use mascara.
I've become fonder and fonder of Too Faced Faux Fur in mink ($18.50 at Beauty.com).
This product is
a two in one conditioner and mascara. What I've discovered is that
when I use the white conditioner and then fully cover it with the
mascara, I've created full, lush lashes with practically no
clumping. A couple of tricks -- wipe off the tips of both the
conditioner and mascara for easier, no clumping application and really
concentrate on applying mascara to the base of the lashes. This helps create
a thick lash look.
Even out my
skin with a tinted moisturizer.
I happen to like Laura Mercier's ($38 at lauramercier.com) but you
should choose a brand whose colors and formulation work best for you.
Use a
little cream blush.
I've always had trouble applying blush that looked natural -- either it
was too heavy or blended right into my skin. Recently a makeup
artist showed me a trick -- use a natural bristle brush (rather than
a synthetic one), tap the bristles ever so lightly into the cream blush, and then
apply it to the cheek area. It's amazing but the result was
exactly what I was looking for -- light and healthy.
Finishing
off with a coat of lip gloss.
Don't forget
your hands and feet. Along
with regular manicures and pedicures, the summer requires special attention
to your hands and feet. First, don't forget to put sunscreen on
both. I had forgotten that washing your hands also washes off many
sunscreens so I recently ended up with hands a shade darker than my arms --
not a great look. So, keep a bottle of sunscreen handy and use it just
before you go out. In regard to your feet, if you don't use sunscreen
the result is self-evident
-- those great looking sandals will turn into unattractive
white stripes. And, talking about feet, keep them smooth with regular
use of a foot cream. Also, between
pedicures you can use a tool to remove calluses such as Tweezerman's Pedro
Callus Stone ($20 at Sephora.com)
or one of Diamancel's product (available at Beauty.com).
So, keep cool
and enjoy!
Have
a beautiful month!
