Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

Mixing It Up:  Create Your Own Couture Shades and a new antioxidant from skinceuticals

Sometimes the colors in the bottles, tubes and compacts look divine.  But, when I put them on my face, nails, or other parts of my body they scream, "What were you thinking."  Now, I know that not every shade will be for me and I try to test products to see how they look with my sallow skin tone.  However, sometimes I can go through product after product and still not find that great shade that's both new and flattering.  (This is not to mention, of course, all the "mistakes" that are stuffed in the drawers of my makeup table.)  So, it dawned on me to experiment by mixing some of those different shades that just weren't quite right by themselves to see if I could create shades that were both flattering and unique.  I've previously mentioned trying some of methods, but here's how I've been creating my own "couture" shades lately.

Eyes - Of course you can mix various eye shadows to get vast variety of colors, intensity, and looks.  I've been mixing matte shadows with glimmer, light with dark, and any other combination I can think of.  However, its with eyeliner that I've really been experimenting.  I've been layering two pencils together along with a powder shadow on top of them to create some really interesting looks.  Think about it.  The possibilities are endless.

Cheeks - I've heard a lot about the highly recommended Tarte Cheek Stain ($28 at Beauty.com),  so naturally I had to try it.  The opportunity came recently and I happily tried all the colors with "Blushing Bride" and "Flush" working the best.  But, I just couldn't decide between the two.  I wore them home, looked in my mirror with great lighting and still couldn't decide.  I ended up buying both shades figuring I'd wear one with one makeup look and the other with an alternate look.  But, after trying each once again, I realized why choosing was so difficult.  On my sallow skin The Blushing Bride looked a little too orange/brown and the Flush a little too blue/red.  So, I experimented.  Using my hand as a palette, I rubbed on a little of each color, mixed them together, and applied to my cheeks.  The result -- a unique color that works with my difficult skin tone.

Lips - I've been searching for a light lip color that's flattering on me -- one that is both up-to-date and doesn't look silly on my over 25 face.  I had recently tried Too Faced Couture Lip Gloss Luxe in Fashionista ($18 at Beauty.com).  I liked the look but, yet, something was still not right.  I had recently read about coloring the entire lip with a lip pencil, close to your natural lip color before adding color or gloss.  So, I went through my stash of pencils trying to find one whose color matched my lips.  Although not an exact match, Dior's lipliner pencil in Tile ($22 at Sephora.com) came relatively close.  So, I tried it under the Too Faced Lip Gloss and voila!  The color was just what I was looking for.

Nails - Probably more than anything else, choosing a nail color that is flattering on me has become a thankless task.  Colors that look great on other people, look terrible on my hands and feet.  It got to the point where I finally found a color and carried it to my manicures to make sure that I ended up with a color I liked.  But, I had used up the bottle and did not have a chance to get another one before my last "mani/pedi."  So, I stood in front of the array of polishes at the spa, painting various colors on my nails, and not being happy with any of them.  I had tried layering one color over another before and had not really liked the result.  This time though, my manicurist helped choose OPI Honeymoon Suite  which we layer over a coat of OPI Sweet Heart ($6.95 each at Spiralhaircase.com).  Well, we had a winner -- so much so that I rushed home to put the two names in my Palm so I wouldn't forget them.  Now I have a color that looks great and that is unique.

The moral of this story-- take a little time one day, have fun,  and EXPERIMENT!

More Beauty Bits...

As we mentioned in our recent newsletter, there's a new antioxidant on the market.  Made by SkinCeuticals (one of my favorite brands), their CE Ferulic is getting some buzz.  Apparently, the addition of the ferulic acid works synergistically with the other ingredients to create a potent antioxidant.  According to the company, this new product is a more effective antioxidant than Idebenone (Prevage).  It should be noted, though, that this is a preventive product, rather than a corrective one.  The company said that although this product helps collagen production some, it is neither a wrinkle reducer nor a firming product.  Simply put, this CE Ferulic appears to be an extremely effective antioxidant which can help prevent premature aging and all that goes with it.  CE Ferulic is being sold at  Greatskin.com, DERMAdoctor.com, and The SkinStore.com where we currently have discounts specials.
