Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more  beauty hints from us

facing forward:  We try 3 skincare products plus  prevage MD

Over the past month I've been trying out some new skin care products.   I realized that little by little I had changed my skin care regimen significantly.  Now that I've started using Prevage MD (more about that later), I've re-thought what my skin care needs might be.  With this in mind, I'll share some of my thoughts about why I tried certain products and how I like them so far.

Cleanser - Exuviance Gentle Cleansing Creme

Why I tried it:

  • It was a polyhydroxy acid cleanser which claimed to be both gentle and able to remove dirt and makeup.

  • Was made by a well respected skin care company

  • Could be used morning & evening

  • Was relatively economical

I was running low on cleanser so I thought I'd look around for one I hadn't tried.  So far, I'm very happy with my choice.  Because I'm used to a cleanser that foams, it took a little getting used to a product that cleans without the bubbles.  However, I'm happy to report that this cleansing cream cleanses well -- even when I'm wearing makeup.  In addition, I've had no sensitivity to the polyhydroxy acid.  It takes three or four pumps to to get an adequate amount of cleanser so I'm not sure just how long the bottle will last.  However,  this 6.8 oz. bottle sold for a relatively economic $18. (available at The SkinStore.com)

Scrub - Ole Henriksen New Beginning - Skin Smoothing Scrub

Why I tried it:

  • It claimed to gently exfoliate even sensitive skin

  • I received it as a sample

Although I have a closet full of samples, for some reason I usually don't try them.  However, realizing that there is little exfoliation in my skin care routine, I've been looking for products that gently exfoliate my sometimes sensitive skin.  So, this one caught my eye, and I'm delighted I gave it a try.  Not one who has had much luck with scrubs (somehow I always manage to scratch myself with them), this scrub lived up to its claims for gentleness.  In addition, it left my skin feeling moist rather than stripped.  I'll be purchasing this one.  ($24 at Sephora.com)

Mask - Dr. Hauschka Firming Mask

Why I tried it:

  • I was looking for an anti-aging mask that could also be used for the eye area.

  • Had heard a number of good things about this product line.

The jury is still out on this one.  I liked the mask and its slight smell of roses.  However, its too early to tell about its anti-aging claims.  Also, at $45 for 1 oz. its a little on the pricey side.  I'm going to keep using it to see how its anti-aging claims pan out, but I'm inclined to use it more as an eye mask so it will last longer. (Available at Sephora.com)

Prevage MD

Why I tried it:

  • Claims to be a very potent antioxidant with the ability to both decrease wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging as well as protecting the skin from damage in the future.

Allergan, the makers of Prevage MD, indicates that it takes six weeks to start to see results.  But, I thought I'd share my thoughts with you at my three week mid-point.  Although its early, I believe I'm starting to see some results.  Some of my fine lines and a couple of wrinkles seem to be a little less pronounced.  The overall clarity of my skin seems somewhat improved as well.   The trick will be to see what happens over the next, three, six, and ten weeks.

A few thoughts on application.   Allergan says to apply a pea size amount.  I use approximately a pump and a half.  I find that if I use too much or don't massage it into my skin thoroughly, traces can be found where I have applied it.  I also have found that when I apply the Prevage MD properly, I have had no trouble using my day cream over it.   I have not had a particular problem applying foundation over the Prevage MD and day cream, although it is probably not going on quite as smoothly has it did without the Prevage MD underneath.  *Editors note:  Since this article was published in 2004, they have reformulated Prevage MD into a serum so that application is much easier and subsequent products such as moisturizers and foundations go on much more smoothly over it.

Sensitivity - I have had absolutely no sensitivity from Prevage MD.  However, some of our visitors indicated that they had severe rashes from the product after several days use.  Allergan was contacted about this rash and we were informed that approximately 2% of Prevage MD users break out in a rash.  According to Allergan, the problem appears to be Prevage MD's use in conjunction with some other creams.  The company also indicated that once the swelling goes away, those who have slowly started to re-use Prevage MD have not had the same problem.   Also, you might want to check out the Prevage.com website to see exactly what Allergan is saying and recommending.

If you are concerned about this sensitivity,  you might want to spot test Prevage MD for several days alone and then spot test it with the other products you plan to use in conjunction with Prevage MD.  Actually, spot testing is a good idea prior to using any new product since it is possible to get allergic reactions from any product.

As time continues we will let you know our continuing thoughts about Prevage MD.  For more information about  Prevage MD including where to buy it, please go to our Prevage page.
