Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

tiny treasures:  10 great products under $15

Recently, I introduced a friend to one of my beauty essentials with the comment, "it's great and really inexpensive."  So that got me thinking about all the other goodies that I rely on (and sometimes take for granted) which have the added advantage of being very affordable.  Never one to keep a beauty secret, I thought I would share some of these "little treasures" with you.

Rosebud Lip Salve - I have been using this wonderful "lip" balm for years.  It smells like roses, heals chapped lips, and is great for other minor skin irritations.  What more could you ask. ($5.50 at Sephora.com)

Aveeno Replenishing Cleansing Lotion - I found this great product when I was looking for a cleanser that I could pour into a bottle for travel.  Certainly, this cleansing lotion fit the bill, but I discovered it did more than just pour into a travel bottle.  This soap free lotion, thoroughly cleansed my skin (even with makeup) yet was extremely gentle so it fits both my morning and evening routines.  Now I don't travel without it.  ($6.69 at drugstore.com)

Cutex Quick & Gentle Nail Polish Remover Pads - What to do when you want to use non-acetone polish remover but somehow you never can get it to remove the polish?  The answer, Cutex Quick & Gentle Nail Polish Remover Pads.  These foiled wrapped pads solve the problem of easily getting the polish off my dry, brittle nails.  As an added bonus I can take them with me when I travel.  I love them. ($3.17 for a package of six pads at drugstore.com)

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream - A guest recently came to my home and asked for a moisturizer for her severely chapped face.  I asked her what skin type was and she told me sensitive.  I looked through my various moisturizers trying to figure out which would be right for her.  Then had a brainstorm, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream.  I use it for my body all winter to moisturize my itchy, dry skin.  But, I knew it was gentle, non-comedogenic, made for very dry skin and appropriate for both face and body.  How often can you find all of this in one great cream?  (16 oz. for $11.99 at drugstore.com)

L'Occitane Shea Butter Tinted Lip Balm - I recently discovered this rich, tinted lip balm and decided to try it.  Well, I'm glad I did.   Now, I can both moisturize my lips and add a little color at the same time.  I chose blackberry, which looks very dark in the can.  I love the color, though, which I can make subtle or dramatic depending upon my mood. Sometimes I put it over the Rosebud Lip Balm for a really glossy look and the ultimate in moisturizing.  ($13 at Sephora.com)

Maybelline Expert Eyes 100% Oil Free Eye Make-up Remover (for washable eye makeup) - I hate that oily residue that some eye makeup removers leave.  I use an eye cream so I certainly don't need my eye makeup remover to "moisturize. " So, I was delighted to discover this great product several years ago.  It takes off my eye make-up, leaves nothing behind, and is among the most affordable of all the products I use.  ($3.99 at drugstore.com)

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat - I was introduced to this great product in a beauty supply store when I complained that some nail polishes caused me to have an allergic reaction when I touched my face.  The saleswoman's suggestion of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat was inspired.  Simply, it's the best top coat I ever used.  This slightly thick top coat dries to a hard, glossy shine in no time at all.  It's become an essential for me and I never go to the manicurist without it.  ($9.00 at spiralhaircase.com)

Upstage Cosmetic Wedges - I'm not sure what it is, but I find my makeup goes on smoother with these cosmetic wedges than any other I've found.  These non-latex sponge wedges have an extremely soft and smooth texture which seems to help the makeup glide over my skin.  Maybe it's my imagination, but I'm sticking with these little gems. ($0.99 for a package of 6 wedges at Walgreens.com)

ALFAPARF Semi Di Lino Cristalli Illuminating Shine Finish - This is the product I reach for when I want to tame a little frizz or add some extra shine before a big evening.  This great spray does both without weighing down my fine curls.  Plus, it leaves my hair soft (no stickiness here).  Great for humid days and big nights.  ($14.40 at spiralhaircase.com)

Acrylic Makeup Organizers - Yes, I have a lot of makeup to organize, but even if you aren't an authentic makeup junkie like me, an acrylic makeup organizer can make your life a lot easier.  You don't have to hunt for that brush or particular shade of lipstick.  It's all right there at your fingertips.  If you're always running a little late like I am, you'll really appreciate having your makeup all in one place.  I found my organizer a few years ago at a Bed, Bath & Beyond store.  They didn't have them online but I found a nice variety of organizers at containerstore.com starting at about $13.  Try one.  I think you'll be glad you did.

Have a beautiful month!
