chase away the holiday blues:  10 ways to celebrate and pamPer yourself

I always look around at holiday time and wonder who's wearing those sparkly dresses and "to-die-for" shoes and where are they going with them.  It seems that I typically have a relatively uneventful holiday season with few parties and little reason to dress up.  Often December passes and I feel left out of the fun.  So, this year I decided to focus on what I could do to spend the time that I could have been partying...but wasn't ... on some fun ways to pamper myself and get ready to sparkle come January. (We'll also let you popular partygoers in on the secrets.  They work just as well for getting ready to party as for those home for the holidays.)

Get a massage - In my view, no one can claim they have been truly pampered without getting a message.  Relax and enjoy.  Chances are you'll never think about what you may be missing on the party scene.

Take a long, leisurely bath - Enjoy your down time with a bath to end all baths.  Get yourself a bath pillow, something wonderful to put in the water, and some great smelling candles.  Put on one of your favorite CDs and just relax!  When you're done, slather on some rich and fragrant body cream or lotion.  And, maybe, jump into a new nightgown or pajamas you bought just for the occasion.

Get a makeover for the new year - Okay, everyone else may be going to the cosmetic counter to get a "holiday look."  But not you.  You're ahead of the curve and are there to get some products that will help you shine through the winter.  I suggest asking the makeup artist to help with a great everyday look and promise yourself that you'll buy at least one product that he or she suggests.

Give yourself a facial - Although this is part of my beauty ritual all year long, those extra few minutes I find during the holiday season can be well spent on to a relaxing and cleansing facial.  Rather than rushing to exfoliate or waiting for a mask to take effect while watching the clock, promise yourself the time to relax and enjoy the process.  These are the times when I may use more than one mask (for example, exfoliating and hydrating), put cucumber slices over my eyes, and lie back and enjoy the silence.

Get a new cut, color or some highlights - I know, going to the salon this time of year can be a downer.  Everyone seems to be talking about the parties they've been to and those to come.  Well, I say just ignore them and treat yourself to a new look.  There's nothing like a great new hair style or hair color to make you feel great.  Not that adventurous?  Well then, treat yourself to a few highlights.   Start the new year with hair that everyone else will envy and, more importantly, you will adore.

Get in some extra exercise time - I hate to exercise though I know that I must.  However, something makes me feel both virtuous and smug as I get in those extra exercise minutes while others are eating and drinking calories they will regret in the morning.

Invite a friend over for "beauty night" - Holidays are a time for friends so take advantage and have a "girls beauty night."  Give each other a manicure and pedicure.  Indulge in facials.  Try new hairdos on each other.  Jaqua (available at Sephora.com) makes sets that are perfect for these occasions or find wonderful products and make your own.  Just put out some wine and goodies and laugh through the night.

Treat yourself to a spa package - Spas often have specials where they combine a sampler of different services at a reasonable price.  It's a great way to try new services or new spas as well as pampering yourself to the hilt.  Problem finding an appointment in December...book something for January and spend the holiday looking forward to it.

Pamper your hands and feet - Treat your hands and feet a "spa experience" at home by giving them to an intensive moisturizing treatment.  Several brands (Borghese, Bliss, and Sephora) make gloves for this purpose and Bliss makes socks and a cream to moisturize your feet.  Some gloves come with moisturizer and with others you need to buy your own.   Another option is to find some great moisturizing hand and/or foot cream appropriate for these treatments  and use your own cotton gloves and socks.  Weleda Skin Food ($12.50) is just one of many products that will do the trick.  Don't feel like messing up your gloves and socks, well just put on your creams and wrap your hands and feet in baggies or plastic wrap.  This is a perfect way to pamper your hands and feet and get ready for the winter's cold.  All products mentioned above are available at Sephora.com.

Go shopping for a hat - They say that in the 1950's when a woman wanted to cheer herself up she went shopping for a new hat.  Now I know that the 1950's are long gone and that hats aren't worn much as fashion items.  In addition, I hate shopping during the holiday season as much as anyone.  But, with all that being said, over the last few years I've discovered how much fun it is shopping for new hats and millinery stores are not necessarily that busy during the holidays.  If you can find a milliner near you, stop in, keep an open mind, and try on several different styles.  You'll be surprised at the hats that look fabulous on you. (I never thought I was a hat person either.)  A flattering hat is an attention getter and, besides, with the cold weather setting in its practical too!

Have a beautiful month!
