Beauty, Fragrance and Fashion Classics:  straight up and with a twist

Classic beauty looks, classic fragrances, and classic accessories.  Here at Beauty Survival I guess you could say we're addicted to them.  We love these classy, understated, but never able to be ignored looks and scents these classics impart.  But, we don't like to be bored either.  So, we're always excited to find items that have their roots in the classics but also have their own unique little twist.  We think think there's room in your beauty, fragrance and accessory wardrobe for both, so let's take a look at some examples.

 Beauty and Fragrance  Classics

Red Lipstick

Red lipstick fits both the categories of classic and "with a twist" at this moment in time.  Red lips (along with nude eyes, plenty of mascara, sheer cheeks and fabulous looking skin) has both classy and classic written all over it.  And, even though it's coming back in a big way, seeing a nude eye and bold mouth is a "bit of a twist" since it's been absent for quite a while.

So to get you started, we've gathered some products that we thought were good examples of what you might need to achieve this classic look.

Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick Folie De Grenat 525- $26

I just love red lipstick -- it's so classy and sophisticated.  Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick in Grenat is a great example of a classic red. However, if you're shy of red lips, colors ranging from berry to plum also give a lovely bold lip that work beautifully with this look.  Most importantly, pick a lipstick shade that's flattering to you.

NARS Duo Eyeshadow Compact, All About Eve - $31

Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif with Applicator Smudge Tip, Basic Black - $24

Forget the heavy shadows and liners.  A little muted shadow on the lid, a light contrasting shadow in the crease if you like, and liner applied with a light touch right at the lid line are all that you need.  The Nars All About Eve Duo gives you two pale colors that you can wear either together or alone and the Kevyn Aucoin Eye Pencil comes with a smudge tip that will let you smudge the liner down into your lashes leaving only a hint of color.

Blinc Grand Lash Primer- $15

tarte mascara Lights, Camera, Lashes!, Black-$18

Thick, luxurious lashes are the rule in this look!  First use a lash primer and then pick a great mascara to make your eye lashes really pop.  There are plenty of new products whose formulas lengthen and thicken better than ever.  The Blinc Grand Lash Primer will ready your lashes for your mascara and the tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes is one of the new mascaras that curls, lengthens, and volumizes all in a single mascara.

Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation, Tanami (Medium Ivory)- $40

Sue Devitt Silky Blush For the Face, Koh Samui-$20

Great looking skin is always important, but particularly in this type of a classic look.  So, your foundation takes on some importance.  The trick is to find one that perfects the skin without giving it that "makeup" look.  The first trick is to find a color that matches your skin exactly.  The second is to find the formula that hides the flaws without looking like your wearing foundation.  Not always an easy task.  I've had luck with the Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation.  It comes in quite a number of colors and I've found the coverage good without being too heavy.   This look also requires just a veil of color on the cheeks.   So just a dusting of a light colored blush like Sue Devitt's Koh Samui does the trick.

Fragrance Classics

With the multitude of fragrances, it's hard to believe but the industry categorizes them into seven main categories (there are several sub-categories within each.)  These categories are Floral, Chypre, Fougere, Marine, Oriental, Citrus, and Green.  Below we took three of these categories and chose two classics in each -- one older (think traditional classic) and one newer (think "with a twist").

Floral

By far, floral fragrances represent the bulk of women's perfume.  And, I must admit most of my favorites fall into this category.

Joy by Jean Patou EDT Spray 2.5 oz. $58.79icon

The Classic - Joy is a true classic and was "the costliest fragrance in the world," when introduced in 1930.  More than 70 years later, Joy remains a favorite.

Creed Fleurissimo icon- 1 oz EDP Spray $47.39

With A Twist - Perhaps less known but a classic on its own, Fleurissimo by Creed was commissioned by Prince Rainier of Monaco to be worn by Grace Kelly on their wedding day in 1957. This scent was introduced in 1972 and has become a favorite of many discerning women.

Oriental

Rich, warm, and spicy these scents can project a bit of mystery from such ingredients as musk, balsam, resins, and woods.

icon Shalimar icon- 2.5 oz EDP Spray $52.79

The classic - Shalimar was not only one of the first oriental scents created but one of the first important fragrances on the market. This classic created in 1925 remains popular today.

Opium icon- 1.7 oz EDP Spray $58.50

With A Twist - The name Opium created quite the controversy when Yves Saint Laurent introduced this oriental scent in 1977.  That was just the beginning of what was to become  a new classic oriental fragrance.

Chypre

Perhaps less well known than the floral and oriental fragrances, chypre scents are rich, earthy, and often contain the ingredients bergamot, oakmoss, citrus, and patchouli.

Miss Dior - 1.7 oz EDT Spray $47.39

The Classic - Miss Dior, was launched by Christian Dior in 1947, the year he introduced his groundbreaking "New Look" in fashion.  Miss Dior became a hit and still remains popular six decades later.

Cabochard - 1.7 oz EDT Spray $21.00icon

With A Twist - First introduced in 1959 by the French fashion house Gres, this lovely chypre scent was re-introduced in 1972.

Accessory Classics

The  Black Evening Clutch

The black evening clutch is both a classic and a wardrobe staple.  Of course its "plucked" out of the closet for those black tie affairs, but it can dress up anything from a pair of jeans to a suit.  This little gem is among the most versatile accessories you can own.

The Classic

Satin Clutch With Jet Stones

Aspects Satin Clutch With Jet Stones - $84

The Aspects Satin Clutch shown above is a great example of the classic black evening clutch.  Simple, with just a little detail, it can be worn with multiple outfits and can sit in the front of your closet.

With A Twist

Pleated Silk Clutch

Inge Christopher Pleated Silk Clutch - $124

Although shown above in eggplant, this Inge Christopher's variation on the classic black clutch also comes in a stunning black (as well as chocolate and platinum) color.  This bag twists the more sedate look with pleats, beads, and a floral accent.  Although it's definitely dressier, it still can be versatile if you use it as an accent piece with a very simple outfit.

Tod's Bamboo - Black Satin Mini Evening Barrel Bag - $495

Tod's evening barrel bag is a great alternative to the classic black clutch.  A little different, I think it gives a traditional evening outfit a sort of "surprise" factor.  Plus, you can use it in for so many other occasions.

The  Black Shawl

It doesn't matter where you live, where you're going, or what the season, the temperature is always unpredictable.  What better way to make sure you're fashionably warm than with a great black shawl to throw over your shoulders.  Keep it handy and grab it as you're walking out the door.

The Classic

Basile Fringed Solid Wool And Cashmere Pashmina Shawl - $78

A lightweight black wool is one of my "can't live without" items.  No matter what the season, I pull it out of my closet if I think I might need a little added warmth.  It also adds a little pizzazz to an outfit, too.

With A Twist

Basile Beaded Chiffon Silk Stole icon-$98

If you're looking to dress up an outfit or add a little drama try a dressier type of shawl.  Basiles's Beaded Chiffon Silk shows how just one accessory can turn an outfit from sedate to glamorous.

Classic Handbags

The Classic

Any way you look at it, a top handled frame leather bag says both class and classic all in one glance.  From Kelly to Birkin, these classic bags have graced the arms of style setters for decades.

Fontanelli Black Embossed Leather Large Satchel Bag - $399

Fontanelli's Black Leather Satchel Bag is a great example of this classic  closed black leather frame bag embellished with gold hardware and straps on the side.  You can't go wrong with this sophisticated evergreen which may wear out but will never go out of style.

With A Twist

Buti Camel Italian Pebble Leather Small Handbag - $319

Forzieri Black Pebble Genuine Italian Leather Frame Tote Bag - $356

Though similar in feeling to the classic with its top handles and frame design, Buti's Camel Pebble Leather Handbag and Forzieri's Black Pebble Leather Tote both add a new twist.  Their shapes,  hardware, and handles gives each a little individuality while maintaining the essence of the classics they are.

Long Black Gloves

The Classic

Long black gloves are a classic wardrobe staple.  They represent a  true example of elegance and usefulness.

Forzieri Cashmere Lined Black Italian Leather Long Gloves - $115

Forzieri's long black cashmere lined glove is a perennial classic accessory. Keeping your hands warm while imparting a timeless sophisticated look, you can't go wrong with these in your wardrobe.

With A Twist

Forzieri Women's Red Italian Leather Gloves- $109

Add a little "pop" to a classic outfit with with a touch of color.  These red cashmere lined gloves are both classic and a bit bold.

Classic Jewelry - Earrings

The Classic

Diamond Earrings: 18k White Gold Earrings (3/4 ctw.)- $1,050

Diamond Stud Earrings are among the classics of jewelry.  Worn day or night with jeans or a gown, few other accessories are as versatile.  Reach for them and you know that you're always well dressed in impeccable style.

With A Twist

South Sea Cultured Pearl and Diamond Earrings - $1050

Perhaps you are thinking that pearl studs are as classic as their diamond counterparts so why would we categorize them as "with a twist."  Well, this is true in most cases but with South Sea Pearls we think there's a difference.  South Sea Pearls beautiful color, rarity, and larger size make them candidates for gorgeous earrings (either with or without diamond accents) that are very wearable yet a bit out of the ordinary.

Classic Jewelry - Necklaces

The Classic

18k Gold Akoya Cultured Pearl Necklace (7-7.5mm) - $1325

Could there be anything more classic than a string of pearls?  Probably not.  Often it's the first piece of "good jewelry" you receive in your lifetime and the beautiful luster the pearls impart enhances your look whether it be a with a casual pantsuit or a long gown.

With A Twist

Diamond & Tahitian Cultured Pearl Pendant (9-9.5mm) - $1025

Still classic but with a little variation on this theme, a Tahitian pearl and diamond pendant is a great example finding a way to turn a classic into something a little unusual.  Still very wearable, this necklace however, will draw the eye to the untraditional color of the large Tahitian pearl.

Have a beautiful winter!
