Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

great Beauty product round-up: some of our favorites

With the multitude of beauty products out in the market, what really works?  That's a question we're asked so often.  We always explain that what works for one person might not work for another.  With that in mind, however, I've taken a look at the new products I've tried over the last several months and the products I've been loving for months or years and made a list of some of my winners.

Healing Creams

There are two creams I turn to when I find a spot on my face or body that need some sort of "repair."  It could be extra dry skin or a bit of inflammation or redness.  (Please note:  we're not talking about something that needs the care of a health care professional.)

  • The first is Neova Night Therapy.  ($60 at The SkinStore.com).  I always have a jar or two of this cream in the house since I use it as part of my regular nightly skin care routine.  Over the years, however, I've found that  creams with copper peptides (like Neova Night Therapy) typically heal minor skin irritations.  So, when I see a little redness or feel a bit of dryness, I dab on a bit of this great product and the problem is usually gone within a day or two.

  • Atopalm MLE Cream ($36 at The SkinStore.com).  I had been reading the rave reviews for this product so I decided to try it.  I must say that I like it a lot.  Although I do not find that it takes that place of a prescription cortisone cream as some have inferred, in several cases I've found that it does the job of an over-the-counter cortisone cream without the side effects.  In addition, it's a first rate moisturizer.  So, where I might  have previously turned to my over-the-counter cortisone cream to fix some "ugly little problem" (like what is this red bump doing on my face?),  I now reach for the Atopalm and it usually does the trick relatively quickly and very gently.

Hand & Body Moisturizers

I've tried a few new products that claim to moisturize through their "miracle properties," but so far I've found nothing that work better than these two winners from Aveeno.

  • The first is Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($10.99 at drugstore.com).  This unscented body lotion is not greasy (at least I don't think so) yet moisturizes for 24 hours.  I think it's great stuff as well as being terrific "bang for your buck."

  • The second little gem from Aveeno is their Skin Relief Moisturizing Cream ($10.29 at drugstore.com).  Although not a hand cream per se, I turn to it again and again since my hands are often chapped and red.  Non-greasy and easily absorbed, this cream is the best I've found for taking care of my hands, particularly when they are rough and sore.

Exfloliating Mask

In my world masks come and masks go (and more often than not sit in my medicine cabinet going unused).  However, the one that I've happily turned to for years is  SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Mask ($33 at The SkinStore.com).  This once a week mask deep cleans, refines pores, and exfoliates. I find it gentle but swear I see results every time I use it.

hair dryer

The new BaByliss Radiant Heat Dryer for Colored Treated Hair ($79.95 at at Folica.com) has just come out on the market.  Yes it's great for color treated hair, but if your hair is curly that's where it's really makes its mark.  This dryer features the type of radiant heat technology that my salon uses to style my curls.  Unlike most other dryers, it's round and has a low air flow.  The radiant heat allows the hair to dry quickly and without frizz.   It also comes with a stand so that you can take advantage of hands free drying.  I recently purchased this dryer elsewhere for a lot more money before it was available at Folica.com and I have to admit, that even at the more expensive price, I just love it!

Exercise cd

I'll admit it.  I absolutely hate to exercise.  Not only that, but as a kid I was always the last one picked for every team.  Uncoordinated is my middle name.  (Not really but it might as well be.)  So, when my doctors, scale, and clothes all got together and told me at the same time that I had to start to exercise, I was not a happy camper.  After a number of fits and starts (and a couple of unhappy trips to a Manhattan gym where all the women seemed to be 23, 5'11, and 115 lbs) someone told me about a CD that I could actually do in my apartment with no equipment needed.  It's Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds ($19.98 at barnesandnoble.com )  This set of 3 CDs has a 15 minute session, a 30 minute session, and a 45 minute session.  After reading the great reviews I decided to buy it figuring I could find a place to stash it when I stopped using it after about a week.  But a strange thing happened.  I found the workout to be tolerable -- I do the 30 minute one -- and better yet because I didn't have to leave the house (or my bedroom) I was able to work it into my schedule relatively easily.  To my great surprise its been almost a year and I'm still "walking away those pounds" many weekday mornings.

Have a beautiful time!
