Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

Spring and summer faces  2006:  hot Makeup looks for the Spring and summer seasons

What are some of the hot looks for Spring and Summer 2006, you may be asking?   I thought it would be interesting to get some tips from two terrific makeup artists -- one from the East coast and one from the West coast.  So, I went to Boston's  Katrina Hess,  owner of Katrina Hess Weddings and named "Best of Boston" by Boston Magazine for the last three years and Los Angeles area's Lusine Galadjian, owner of the Makeup Spot who creates looks for celebrities and models as well as us "mere mortals."  Here's what each had to say.

Katrina's Tips:

Face

  • To get that natural "lit from within" look, start with a facial self tanner and apply it to the flat surfaces of your face just as you would a bronzer. Shiseido makes a fabulous tinted bronzing self tanner with SPF 17 called Brilliant Bronze Self Tanning Cream For Face. (It's $24 and available in many department and specialty stores including Dillards, Nordstrom, Macy's, and Sephora.  Check the Shiseido.com website to find out where to purchase it in your area).  Using the self tanner only on the highlighted areas of the face creates a super natural look.

  • Use concealer in shaded areas.

  • Over the self tanner apply Nars' Madly blush ($25 at Sephora.com) if you are light skinned or Trish McEvoy's All Over Face Color in Weekend ($28 at Nordstrom.com) if you have medium to dark skin.

  • Highlight the apples of the cheeks with a coral or pinky color.

Eyes

  • Colored liner and mascara are the rage! Especially blue. Start with either Smashbox's cream eyeliner ($22 at Sephora.com) or Mac's waterproof Fluidline eyeliner ($14.50 at Gloss.com). Apply with a thin brush to the lash line.

  • Apply mascara in either black or brown.  Apply a second coat of mascara using either a bright blue or another bright color only to the tips. Gorgeous in daylight at the beach. (Sephora.com carries many brands who make colored mascara including Anna Sui, Cargo, and Hard Candy among others and MAC makes a blue and a green mascara which are $10 each and available at macys.com)

Lips

  • For extra glossy lips that don't run or feel heavy on warm summer days try using Neutrogena's new MoistureShine Lip Soother in any of six shades.  Three of my favorites are Sheen, a coral; Shine, a pink, and Shimmer, a clear.  (Since this is a new product, we have had difficulty finding it online at the moment.  However, we expect that it will be available in outlets that sell the Neutrogena line.  You can take a look at the product at the Neutrogena.com website.)

Lusine's Tips:

Glowy Skin

This spring and summer, we'll be seeing more of a natural, healthy looking skin that glows.  I like to use Souffle de Teint by Clarins. (Also known as Color Tint, it is $34 at CosmeticMall.com)  It is a feather-light, incredibly natural-looking make-up which instantly veils the complexion in light to discreetly even skin tone and bring color.  It gives the complexion an instant healthy glow effect and maximum radiance.  As for your cheeks, I like to use Multi Blush by Clarins ($26 at CosmeticMall.com).  It is a lightweight creamy powder that can be applied with your fingertips to add a touch of color.  It's available in four shades: Tender Apricot, Tender Lichee, Tender Chestnut, and Tender Raspberry.

Berry Lips

This season there are a lot of bright, playful colors with lots of shine.  Come spring, juicy, berry and fruity lip colors will be all the rage.  Try "Pocket Pal" from Benefit, a mini Benetint ($18 at Sephora.com).  It has a rosy lip stain on one end paired with a clear gloss on the other end.  It's a color that lasts all day.

Bold Brows

Brows on the spring runways were penciled, powdered and gelled back with arches.  This look defines the eye and gives the whole face structure.  Try MAC brow set ($12.50 at macys.com).  It's a brush-on gel that grooms and slicks brows into shape without flaking or stiffening the brows.  It's available in several tinted shades as well as clear.

Eyes

This season eyes are shimmery with colors ranging from golds and mauves to purples.  Try Stila's Floating Eye Shadow (P.S. from Beauty Survival -- we can no longer find this product).  This is a liquid shadow that melts onto lids wrinkle-free.  Apply a thin layer of Floating Eye Shadow and wait seconds while smooth twinkling eyes are unveiled.  These shadows go on wet and dry down to a shimmery veil.  They can be used as a base shade or layered over the top of your favorite eye shadow.

And finally, a few observations from me...

  • The trend for nail color this season appears to be soft and light.    Although there is not one specific color of the season, you may want to keep your fingers and toes on the subtle side.

  • Lipstick is making a comeback.  Several brands have come out (or are coming out) with new lipstick formulations.  These include Clinique's Butter Surge Lipstick ($14 at Sephora.com and the absolute favorite of a friend of mine) and Giorgio Armani's ArmaniSilk.  (It's $25 and available at various department stores. Check Giorgioarmanibeautyusa.com for a store in your area.)  I've been enjoying using several shades of this long-lasting lipstick.  We also hear that Chanel will be coming out with a new lipstick formula in the near future.

  • Hair color has become softer.  There has been a change from bold, chunky highlights to a more natural look.

  • And a prediction - I'm going off on a limb on this one and predicting that red lips will be re-appearing in the Fall and/or for the holiday season.  With lipstick making a comeback and red expected to be one of the colors in Fall's fashion palette, I have a hunch that red lips will be making a return to the makeup scene.  Trendy is great but a red lip is bold, classic, and sophisticated.  Let's see if I'm right.

Have a beautiful month!
