Beauty Bits and Tips:  a few more beauty hints from us

glamour looks for the holidays for every budget and age

My holiday makeover came early this year.  At the end of October I attended a Giorgio Armani Cosmetics promotion where I had the pleasure of of meeting their National Face Designer, Tim Quinn as well as having a makeover.

The Look For The Holidays

I asked for a holiday look and was told that a light, shimmery eye and a bright lip was the one to have.  Roberto then proceeded to show me how to do it.  He used the new "Holiday Quad" on my eyes.  This set includes four shimmery shadows - a taupe, a white, a buttery white, and a silver.  First he lined and smudge my eye with a brown pencil (#1) and then used the taupe shadow on the lid up to the brow bone. Then the buttery white was applied on the brow bone, the white on the inside corner of my lid, and a touch of the silver at mid-lid.  Next he lined my eye again, this time using a taupe shadow (#7) and finished with a navy mascara (#3) which helped my eyes to "pop."  My cheeks were blushed with a very sheer pinky/peach  powder blush (#2) , and  for my lips he gave me two choices.  One was a mauve shimmer lipstick (Sheer #10) and the second was a red with a  brown undertone without any shimmer (Lipstick Mania # 10).  He finished it off with a shimmery pink lip gloss (Lip Shimmer #1-Christmas). Giorgio Armani products are available at giorgioarmani-usa.com.

Ramping Down The Cost

The look was beautiful and the makeup itself wonderful, however quite pricey.  So, I began to wonder how I could replicate the look with products that are both less expensive and easier to find.  With that in mind, I went shopping and came up with some ideas.

The first step is to remember that everything but the lip should be sheer.  To begin with I don't think you need four shadows to get this look -- probably two sheer, shimmery ones would do.  For the lightest shade I found two possibilities in the Sephora line.

To replace the Armani taupe was a little more of a challenge -- I couldn't find one.  So, rather than taupe I thought a beige might work and I found one that I liked.

(Actually, you could use any sheer, shimmery, color in the crease of the eye and up over the brow bone. For instance, I've seen a lilac used which was very pretty.)

For a pencil, I found that the Sephora line has a wide variety of browns.  Two that I liked with this look were:

Rather than lining the eyeliner with the taupe shadow (which I found a little too light), I've been using Paula Dorf Eye Color Glimmer Mambo ($19 at Sephora.com).  This black shadow flecked with gold is one of my favorites and I use it with many looks.

As for navy mascara, the hunt was more limited than I thought it would be.  I'll admit I'm not familiar with any of these brands, but the three I found at relatively reasonable prices were:

If you use the Paula Dorf Eye Color Glimmer Mambo, you may just want to use your favorite black mascara.

Blush and lipstick colors are more personal.  What looks good on one might not be as flattering on another.  But the following products are similar to the ones from Armani.

  • For blush, LORAC Blush Rose ($16 at Sephora.com) was similar.
  • For lipsticks, Clinique Berry Freeze Long Last Soft Shine Lipstick was very close to the the Armani mauve lipstick and Clinique Sassy Spice Colour Surge Lipstick was similar to the Red Armani that was chosen. (Each $14 at Sephora.com)

And finally for a shimmery lip gloss, Sephora makes Super Shimmer Lip Gloss in a number of shades ($10 at Sephora.com).  You can pick the one to highlight your lipstick.

Other Budget Alternatives

Another cost effective way to get these holiday looks is to buy palettes with a combination of products.  The upside is that you don't have to put the shades and products together yourself.  The downside is that all the colors in the palette might not be flattering to you.  If you go this route, some of the choices are:

  • Bobbi Brown Sexy Glamour Palette - Three shadows and one lip colors.  I really like this one.
  • Too Faced Quickie Chronicle - The Life of The Party. ($25 at Sephora.com) - Three shadows, a blush, and four lip colors.
  • Lorac ($48 at Sephora.com) - Six shadows, one blush, one lip/cheek tint, lip glosses.
  • Chanel Holiday Palette ($55 at Sephora.com) - I believe it contains four shadows, two blushes, and two lip glosses. (There was no description provided for this product so I'm not sure of the contents.)

Wearing Shimmer At All Ages

So, what can you do if you don't like such a shimmery look or your age doesn't let you wear shimmery products too well (particularly true with eyeshadow).  Here are some suggestions:

  • Pick your spots for shimmer.  You don't have to use shimmery products all over your face.
  • If you have trouble with shimmery eye shadow, pick non-shimmery ones for most of the eye and a shimmery one to highlight the brow bone or the middle of the eyelid.
  • Instead of using an eye shadow primer, cover the lids and brow bone with your foundation, followed by a little translucent powder.  This seems to make the eye shadow less intense.
  • Remember, not all products have the same formulations.  So, choose those products whose "shimmer factor" is less rather than more.
  • Experiment with different looks to see which ones suit you best or ask an expert to help.

No matter what look you choose, have a happy, happy holiday and enjoy.

Have a beautiful month!
